The development of cottages at Lakeside, Ohio has created a walkable architectural history museum. Lakeside was organized in 1873 as a camp meeting site and a temperance summer resort; it soon developed as a Chautauqua, a religious summer educational center. Since there were few permanent dwellings in Lakeside the first year, most of the visitors stayed in tents. As Lakeside grew, cottages replaced the tents. Nearly every year since 1873 a few cottages have been added. Since newly built cottages reflect the currently popular house styles, a walking tour of Lakeside presents a display of architecture spanning from 1873 to the present day.
