Camping is going to be so much fun. Or is it?

The backyard campout is tonight. Jada and Jamal Perkins have never slept in a tent before. Neither have their best friends, Carlita Garcia and Josh Cornell. It's really dark in the backyard. And what's that noise? It's coming from the bushes. Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Scrunch! Scrunch! Scrunch!

Will an unexpected visitor ruin the Bradford Street Buddies campout under the stars? Grab a flashlight and find out in this neighborhood adventure.

PreS-Gr 2-In this installment in the series, twins Jada and Jamal decide to explore the great outdoors when they discover camping supplies in their family's garage. Along with their friends Josh and Carlita, the children organize a search party when their neighbor's cat goes missing. The tension builds to one joyous reunion when they uncover the location of the missing feline. Ink and watercolor illustrations emphasize the warmth found in familiar relationships, and thin lines exude energy and excitement as the children take control of their surroundings. Background colors in shades of orange and blue convey the passage of time. Short chapters, heavy on dialogue, emphasize the growing relationships among friends and family, and clear, emphatic statements suit this selection for beginning readers ready for a slightly more developed story line. VERDICT This gentle narrative offers a few surprises and a delightful twist for newly independent readers.-Meg Smith, Cumberland County Public Library, Fayetteville, NC

Four neighborhood friends and their parents get together for a special campout. When twins Jamal and Jada Perkins clean out their garage, they are intrigued to find an old tent. It doesn't take long for the kids to convince their parents that a campout under the stars will be good fun for them and their best buddies, Josh and Carlita. But before they can enjoy the big night, they find out that another neighbor, Mrs. Mason, has lost her cat and has asked the neighbors to help find her. Four manageable chapters tell the story of the campout and the missing cat. Full-color watercolor illustrations depict an idyllic neighborhood in which the adults and children work together and where children are the center of social life. Josh's dad plays guitar, Carlita's mom knows to bring the makings for s'mores, and Mr. and Mrs. Perkins are not shy about leading the way with mom's ever present whistle and dad's handyman know-how. The book is geared for newly independent readers, and the number of words per page will be a reachable challenge for those looking for a first chapter book. The text placement on the occasional busy pages makes the spreads feel crowded, and young readers might have trouble deciding the proper reading order. This friendly, multicultural neighborhood is where many children live...or wish they lived. (Early reader. 6-9)
