Vintage Quilt Revival

Blakesley, Lee Heinrich, and Faith Jones first collaborated in 2011, when they presented a series of free quilt-block tutorials on their respective blogs. Their aesthetic--traditional quilt blocks, many from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combined with the color sense and graphic boldness of modern quilting--resonated with both modern and traditional quilters. In their first book, the authors reimagine traditional blocks in bright, contemporary fabrics, presenting them in quilt-top layouts that incorporate modern quilting styles such as extensive negative space and on-point settings. Though each of the 20 blocks has a project specifically designed to highlight its modern qualities, readers can also create a sampler quilt applying one or each block or simply use the ideas as a jumping-off point for something unique. A number of the blocks use foundation piecing, and printable paper foundations are included on the accompanying CD. VERDICT Quilters who enjoy vintage quilt designs in modern fabrics and settings (a la Denyse Schmidt or Camille Roskelley) will gravitate toward this collection of new takes on traditional blocks.
